Portugal 2026

In Portugal, we will spend a week rebuilding an old carpentry workshop into a multi-home building with 6 apartments for refugees from Congo and Cameroon in Braga, Portugal. Volunteers can also join in an optional trip beforehand to Morocco or similar with some of the VB crew. This trip is ideal for those who plan to be in Europe during May/June 2026.

Trip Details

Trip Itinerary
Starts in Braga, Portugal Sunday 31st of May 2026 and finishes in Braga Sunday 7th of June 2026. Participants are free to stay on later at own arrangements or join an optional trip to Morroco with other team members prior to the build.

Trip Dates
Depart Sunday 31st May 2026 to Sunday 7th of June 2026. Participants are free to arrive earlier or stay longer if they want to at their own cost and arrangements

Team Size
Approximately 8-15. Volunteer Build will provide a host and local foremen to supervise the building project.

Airfares from Auckland to Europe
These are the responsibility for each volunteer to arrange.

Accommodation
Share Twin in guesthouse with pool.

Catering
Cost includes daily breakfast, lunch and dinner during the build week as well as drinking water on building days.

Transport
Hire vans with local drivers.

Building Contribution
NZD $1,000 per person donation towards the cost of building materials (sourced locally). A tax receipt will be issued for this donation. NZ tax residents may qualify for a tax credit for this donation.

Vaccinations
You will need to consult your doctor, however common vaccinations required are Tetanus, Diphtheria, MMR, Hepatitis A & B, flu vaccination. Remember it’s not just you who needs protection – it’s the kids and families you interact with as well. All team members must be vaccinated to travel on this tour and provide confirmation to us prior to departure. More information will be provided in the full pre-trip briefing.

Visas
A valid passport is required. New Zealanders do not currently require a visa to enter Portugal for tourist stays of less than 90 days.

Travel Insurance
Compulsory and must include coverage for manual labour (building) and medical evacuation and cancellation costs. Volunteer Build offers a policy through Covermore, and a personalized quote will be provided after signing up. Premium depends on age, cancellation coverage and any pre-existing conditions.

Trip Guardians
If you are under 18 years old, you will need to travel with a trip guardian who is 18 years or older. Signed parental consent documentation will be required to travel.
